Panthers Sweep Bobcat Softball Team

LEWISTON, Maine – Middlebury came back from an early 3-0 deficit to score 11 unanswered runs in the first game and Lauren Bowe pitched a three-hitter in the second game as the Panthers swept Bates 11-3 and 5-1 in a softball doubleheader on Lafayette Street Field on Sunday afternoon.

Kyla Decato '06 (Paris, Maine) capped a three run first inning for Bates with a two-run double to left center, but Middlebury responded with four runs in the third and six runs in the fourth inning.

Kathryn Hurd hit an RBI double to get the Panthers within one, and Christina Freyer gave Middlebury its first lead later in the inning with a two-run double. Ellen Sargent hit an RBI single, Hurd hit a two-run single, and Victoria Glowacky and Lily Hamburger added a one run hits in the sixth for the Panthers.

Hurd was 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Freyer finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI. Lauren Battaglia was 3-for-3 for the Panthers.

Decato went 1-for-2 with two RBI, and Amanda Beck '04 (Pleasantville, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 for the Bobcats.

Bowe threw a complete game in the nightcap for Middlebury, allowing just one unearned run on three hits and one walk.

Hurd gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead with an RBI single, and Lauren Guza scored on a sacrifice fly to give Middlebury a two-run cushion.

Dayna Krakower '05 (Derwood, Mass.) led off the bottom of the third inning with a double to deep right center and later scored on an error to cut the lead to one for the Bobcats.

Battaglia, however, restored the two-run lead with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Middlebury added two more runs in the sixth.

Hurd was 3-for-4 to finish the day 5-for-7 with four RBI. Battaglia went 2-for-2 and finished the afternoon 5-for-5 with two RBI, while Guza was 4-for-7 at the top of the order for the Panthers.

Middlebury improved to 14-6, while Bates fell to 5-10. The Bobcats will host Bowdoin in NESCAC East Division play on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Lafayette Street Field.
