King Grants Bobcats Game One Win; Softball Splits with St. Joe's
April 29,
2004 LEWISTON, Maine – Carolyn King hit an RBI single to center to give the Bates softball team a 4-3 win in the eighth inning of the first game, but the Bobcats ran out of late-inning heroics in game two, falling to St. Joseph's 6-5 in the nightcap on Lafayette Street Field on Thursday afternoon. Allyson Ferguson gave the Monks a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth with a two-out double to right field, scoring Jaime Daugherty. Bates came right back in the bottom of the inning, with Dayna Krakower '05 (Derwood, Md.) knocking in Caitlin Murphy '07 (Westwood, Mass.) with a single to right to tie the score. King '07 (Hanover, Mass.) pushed the winning run across the plate, sending Kyla Decato '06 (Paris, Maine) home from third with a two-out single to center. The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead when Murphy scored on a double steal and Krakower hit an RBI single through the middle in the third inning. Bates pitcher Sarah Klenakis '05 (Springfield, Mass.) was perfect through four innings, but the Monks had four consecutive hits to tie the score in the fifth. Klenakis improved to 6-7 on the season, allowing seven hits in the complete game. Krakower finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI. King and Kelley Kugel '04 (Concord, N.H.) were both 2-for-4 for the Bobcats. Jamie Morrison was 2-for-3 to lead St. Joseph's at the plate. St. Joseph's held off a late comeback attempt to beat the Bobcats in game two. The Monks took advantage of four Bates errors, scoring four unearned runs on Bobcat pitcher Kristin Masino '07 (North Arlington, N.J.). Trailing by two in the bottom of the seventh, Bates mustered a pair of base runners, but only Decato was able to score on a sacrifice fly by King. Kahler Dowling went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead the Monks, who moved to 10-29. Decato was 2-for-2, and King was 1-for-3 with a double for Bates, which moved to 7-18. Bates will close the season on Saturday, facing Wesleyan in a doubleheader in Middletown, Conn. |
