Seeberger, Uyar and Bristow win NCAA Titles

LEWISTON, Maine (May 17, 2004) –
UC Santa Cruz’s Matt Seeberger won the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis singles title and Mary Washington’s Dan Uyar and Paul Bristow captured the doubles title at Bates College’s Wallach Tennis Center on Monday.

Seeberger, the tournament’s fourth seed, defeated John Michael Cham-A-Koon of Claremont Mudd-Scripps 6-1, 6-4 in the championship match in the morning. He broke Cham-A-Koon’s serve twice early on to build a 3-0 lead before coasting to a win in the first set, then battled back from a 3-0 deficit to prevail in the second set.

Uyar and Bristow took out CMS’s Cham-A-Koon and Kyle Ellison in the doubles semifinals, winning 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Redlands’ Michael Thoeresz and Brian Murphy, the No. 2 seeded doubles pair, dispatched Michael Malvitz and Julian Seelan of Kalamazoo in the semifinals before falling to the Mary Washington pair 7-5, 6-3.

John Michael Cham-A-Koon is the only player remaining in both the singles and doubles draws.

Claremont Mudd-Scripps’ John Michael Cham-A-Koon won four matches to advance to the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships singles final and doubles semifinal at Bates College’s Wallach Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.

Cham-A-Koon started the day by finishing up a first round doubles match with teammate Kyle Ellison which was suspended by rain on Saturday with a 6-2, 6-2 straight set win. He moved to the singles draw, beating Redlands’ Brian Murphy 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals before defeating Williams’ Andrew Murray 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Cham-A-Koon and Ellison capped the day with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win over top-seeded Mark Odgers and Alex Rogers of Emory in the doubles quarterfinals.

Cham-A-Koon will face UC Santa Cruz first-year Matt Seeberger, the tournament’s No. 4 seed, in the singles championship at 9 a.m. on Monday. Seeberger defeated Carthage’s Dane Schmidgall 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, then beat Brian Marsden of Trinity (Conn.) 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinal round.

The doubles semifinals will begin at 11 a.m., with Cham-A-Koon and Ellison facing Mary Washington’s Dan Uyar and Paul Bristow. Michael Malvitz and Julian Seelan of Kalamazoo will play Redlands’ Murphy and Michael Thoeresz, the second-seeded doubles team. Thedoubles championship is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Monday.

It was a tough day for seeded singles players at the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships at Bates College on Saturday, as six seeded players lost in the first round and MIT’s Evan Tindell, the tournament’s top seed, lost in the second round.

The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds will be contested on Sunday.

Matt Seeberger of UC Santa Cruz, the tournament’s No. 4 seed, was the only seeded player to advance to the singles quarterfinals with a straight set win over Brian Alvo of Washington (Mo.) and a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win over Piedmont’s Sebastian Stanescu.

Washington and Lee’s David Shay earned a spot in the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Tindell and will face Brian Marsden of Trinity (Conn.). Seeberger will play Carthage’s Dane Schmidgall, who defeated No. 6 seed Mark Odgers in the first round.

Williams’ Andrew Murray will face Washington & Lee’s Paul McClure, and Brian Murphy, who defeated No. 8 seed Will Boe-Wiegaard of Bates, will face John Michael Cham-A-Koon from Claremont Mudd-Scripps.

Three doubles matches were completed before play was suspended due to lightning. The top seeds, Mark Odgers and Alex Jacobs, coasted to a straight set victory to advance to the quarterfinals. UC Santa Cruz’s Matt Brunner and Kellen Ali-Christie and Kalamazoo’s Michael Malvitz and Julian Seelan also earned spots in the quarterfinals.

Play will resume on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
