Welcome to the First Year Housing section. The information here is intended to acquaint you with our housing options for First Year students. You may follow the links on the left side of your screen to view documents that are specific to students new to Bates. The Housing Office administers all room assignments for new students. It is Bates policy that each first-year student will live in a “First Year Center,” which consists of a group of First Year students living with an upper-class Bates student known as a Junior Advisor (JA). JAs and Residence Coordinators (RCs) are resident peer advisors who work in close conjunction with the Dean of Students' Office. JAs will act as information resources, mentors, and support people for First Years during their transition to Bates. Each RC oversees a group of JAs. Contact information for Junior Advisors is published on our website under the name of each first-year residence after July 1st. Please note that all First Year students will be assigned a roommate(s). Upper-class students who are new to Bates will be housed in residences with other upper-class students. To help us place you in a living environment that meets your needs, we ask that you review all links to the left and then complete our Residence and Roommate Selection Form on the Garnet Gateway using the instructions under that link. The Garnet Gateway is the Bates secure online records service. It is here that you are able to view personal information on academics, housing, and finances. The online Residence and Roommate Selection Form on the Garnet Gateway will open on June 2nd at 10:00 a.m. and close on June 30th at 11:59 p.m. Our staff will then arrange suitable roommate matches based on the information you provide. We will inform you of your room assignment on the Entering Students site on August 4, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. This information will include your room assignment, the name(s) of your roommates and their address(es), phone number(s) and Bates e-mail address(es) so that you can contact one another ahead of time and perhaps coordinate Things To Bring. We invite you to call our office if you have any questions or concerns. Our phone number is (207) 786-6215 and our office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. You may also reach us via e-mail at housing@bates.edu. |
