2003 Program Notes

The Bates College field hockey team will look to replenish the loss of almost half of its scoring output from the 2002 season and will also need to break in a new goalie this fall.  All-Region players Johie Farrar, Lindsay Gary, Julia Price and Kathrene Tiffany were all lost to graduation, and three more were lost to the study abroad program. Price set a school career record for assists, 22, which snapped a 14-year mark. After a one-year hiatus from postseason play, the Bobcats made the conference tournament, and came close to hosting an opening round game.

Lori Jessup '04 (Hatboro, Pa.) and Annie Schauer '04 (Louisville, Ky.) will be the leading returning scorers for the Bobcats, as each scored five goals last season, and Jessup added an assist.  Jessup has scored 12 goals and assisted on two more in her career while Schauer has nine goals and an assist in her career.

Bates will rely heavily on several returnees and first-year players to pick up the scoring load. Samara Khalique '04 (West Hartford, Conn.) and Sarah Overmyer '05 (Ann Arbor, Mich.) return as point scorers. Sarah Judice '06 (Granby, Conn.) could take over in net after seeing 35 minutes of playing time last year.

In early August, the Bobcats will venture overseas to play in five matches against club teams in England and Holland. The 11-day tour will serve both as preseason training and as a learning experience of different cultures. "This trip will be a great opportunity for players to get experience on the field," said head coach Wynn Hohlt.
