2003 Program Notes

Coach Al Fereshetian will begin his ninth year at the helm of the men's cross country program without one of the finest athletes in the history of Bates athletics -- Justin Easter. The talented distance runner graduated in the spring and took with him two All-America awards in cross country after participating in the NCAA Division III Championships in all four of his years at Bates. Easter finished third at the NCAA Championships last year, the highest individual finish in the history of the program.

Robert Gomez '05 is the top returning runner for the Bobcats. He finished second at the Bates Invitational, 31 seconds behind Easter, and was eighth at the State of Maine Championships, held at Bates' home course at the Twinbrook Recreational Area in Cumberland. Joel Anderson '05 also had an impressive season for the Bobcats. After finishing 12th at the State Championships, he placed in the top 30 of the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championships at Tufts. Anderson performed well in the distance events during the spring track and field seasons, and will look to continue to improve during the fall season. Also expected to contribute as consistent point scorers are Andrius Staisiunas '05 and Michael Downing '05.

Preseason begins a few days prior to the Annual Alumni Meet on campus. Bates’ schedule features multi-team meets against the best programs in New England, leading up to the State of Maine, Open New England, NESCAC and NCAA championships. The Bobcats’ annual goal is to be among the best teams regionally and nationally in Division III. Bates' home course provides varied terrain and is popular with both the Bobcats and their opponents.
