2003 Program Notes

Fresh off a Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) title, the Bates College football team will look to continue to improve after posting a 3-5 record in the 2002 season, one year after finishing 1-7 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). While head coach Mark Harriman will have to find replacements for a number of players in skilled positions, he does have 16 of 22 starters returning, including a veteran corps of seniors on the offensive and defensive lines.

Perhaps the most difficult replacement will be at running back. Sean Atkins, who finished his career ranked second on Bates' all-time rushing list, had his best season in his senior year, netting 1,069 yards on the ground. His seven touchdowns and 302 yards against Bowdoin were both school records, leading the Bobcats to a 48-28 win.  The Bobcats also lost Marc Van Keuren to graduation, the team's second leading rusher and the only other running back with more than 10 attempts last season, and Paul Tenney, last year's co-captain and the starting fullback. Harriman will also have to find a replacement for Kane Jankoski, Bates' starting quarterback for the last three seasons. Jankoski completed nearly 60% of his passes, connecting for four touchdowns in 2002.

The new quarterback for the Bobcats will have benefit from having a pair of experienced receivers. Starting wide receivers Owen Miehe '04 (Glen Rock, N.J.) and Matt Orlando '05 (South Portland, Maine) combined for 62 receptions and all four touchdowns from Jankowki last season. The duo hauled in nearly 750 yards, averaging over 90 total receiving yards per game, and both were ranked in the top-10 in the conference in receptions and receiving yards per game.

The quarterback and the running backs will also be able to rely on a solid returning offensive line, with nearly the entire group from the 2002 season returning intact as seniors. Right tackle Jared Cash (Norway, Maine), right guard Justin Levesque (Portland, Maine), left guard Jeff Bolduc (Southborough, Mass.), and center Nick Markos (Lynn, Mass.) are joined by classmate Mike Moynahan (Gloucester, Mass.) at tight end.

Defensively, the Bobcats return nine starters, including six seniors.  Bates finished the 2002 season ranked second in the NESCAC in Red Zone Defense, forcing seven turnovers in 31 opponent trips to the red zone. The defense was ranked fourth in the conference in Passing Defense Efficiency, and only allowed six touchdown receptions, good for a tie for second in the league. Seniors Dave Freeman (Winchester, Mass.), Jon Moody (Moody, Maine), Kurt Chapman (Brunswick, Maine) and junior Jon Beatty (Watertown, Mass.) all return as starters from last season.  Harriman also has three returning linebackers, with Pat Foley '04 (Newburyport, Mass.) and Kevin Madden '05 (Concord, N.H.) combining for over 100 tackles. Senior Pat Connors (Randolph, Mass.) was tied for fourth in the league with two forced fumbles. Mike Horan '05 (Stoughton, Mass.), who was tied for second in the NESCAC with 10 tackles for loss last year, returns at defensive back for the Bobcats. Also returning are seniors Rob Maguire (Wayland, Mass.) and junior Luis Martinez (Cleveland, Ohio).

On special teams, Harriman will have the benefit of two reliable place kickers in seniors Nat Carr (Cambridge, Mass.) and Andy Peters (Castle Rock, Colo.), who combined to convert 14-of-17 PATs last year.  Peters added a 41-yard field goal in a 37-0 shutout against Hamilton in the last game of the 2002 season. Carr doubled as the Bobcats punter last year, averaging over 31 yards per kick. On returns, Horan and Maguire took nearly every kickoff return, with Maguire averaging nearly 20 yards per return and Horan averaging 15. Maguire also returned punts for Bates last year.
