2003-04 Program Notes

Brian Gerrity is Bates' leading returning scorer.
The 2003-04 Bates men's basketball team will look to fill the void of two skilled graduated seniors in CJ Neely and Angelo Salvaggio. Neely became the 25th men's basketball player to surpass the 1,000-point milestone at Bates, and was just four rebounds shy of recording 500 for his career. Salvaggio recorded the first triple-double in the history of the program, and his presence will be missed.

Despite the loss of Neely and Salvaggio, expectations will again be high for next season. The Bobcats have recorded three winning consecutive winnings seasons for the first time since the 1960's, and will return a solid nucleus of talent who will continue their winning ways with unselfish teamwork and intensity on both ends of the floor.  The team's goals for the 2003-04 season include securing their fourth straight winning season, earning their second Colby-Bates-Bowdoin title in four years, and winning the prestigious New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship.

There is no doubt that Bates has one of the best returning backcourts in the conference. Returning at guard is starter Brian Gerrity '05 and returning after studying abroad, Ramon Garcia '04.

Gerrity averaged 13.4 points per game, almost four assists per game and led the team with 59 three-point field goals. Garcia started the first eight games of the season, averaging just under 10 points a game. As a sophomore, he averaged 7.2 points and dished out a team-high 89 assists. Last year, Garcia sank six three-pointers to lead Bates to the Rivier College Tip-Off Tournament championship.

Bates fans and players celebrate a last-second win over Trinity last season.

Swingman Jon Furbush '05 returns as does point guard Sean Cahill '06. Academic All-NESCAC forward Elliott Linsley '05 grabbed 138 rebounds a year ago and will anchor the Bobcats in the paint. Matt Chudomel '06 and Pat Conroy '04 will also see plenty of time on the court to bolster the inside game.

Victor Rivera '05 (New York, N.Y.), selected as the team's Most Improved Player last season, will also be a key element for the 2003-04 season.

The tradition of excellence associated with Bates College will continue to grow as the team attracts more talented student athletes who will take advantage of the academic and athletic opportunities available that Bates offers.
