We discussed three topics: Matrix of Initiatives, Consultant and Environmental Coordinator.
We discussed a conversation Erin and Ben had had with Paul Farnsworth about electricity contracts. Bob spoke about the process of architect selection and how buildings are built in general.
We began by discussing the upcoming plans for the College to build a new dorm commons around Rand, and a new dining facility, as called for in the Master Plan. We discussed what would comprise the "justification" for increasing the environmental coordinator position from half time to full time. We talked about contacting Paul Farnsworth to learn about the timescale for renewal of our electricity contract, with an eye towards purchasing green electricity.
John reported on a meeting he’d had with Terry and the President on November 19, regarding the progress of the Task Force. We began discussing the initiatives we want to focus on in the coming years, following a rough “matrix” outline.
We began discussing the Environmental Coordinator Job Description draft [11/9/01] from Camille. We talked about who the Ecoordinator should report to. We talked about funding the proposed 2nd half of the Environmental Coordinator position. We discussed the justification for a full time Ecoordinator.
We continued discussion of the Environmental Coordinator’s list of responsibilities and we reviewed a letter from Rachel Austin discussing environmental stewardship at Bates. Frank shared a draft of a preamble to the College’s Environmental Policy statement. John suggested that we think about naming the 4-5 major environmental initiatives to recommend in our report.
We worked on the job description for the Environmental Coordinator.
We launched into a discussion of the mission of the Task Force, and saw it as two-part: Structure and Initiatives. We also spent significant time on the importance of vision.
Energy was the primary focus of our discussions this day.
We began with reports on work individuals and groups had done over the summer on the topics outlined in the May 20 meeting notes.
We reviewed the charge of the committee: to develop a five-year plan of environmental goals for the College. A report outlining this plan should be completed by December 31, 2004.
