For the past several years, Lee has been interested in science education at all levels. Her students participate in service-learning projects at local schools, and have worked with teachers to develop science curricula for middle and high school students. She has also helped to develop a Biotechnology course at Edward Little High School.

]]>Professor Kleckner is a neuropharmacologist interested in studying the neuronal receptors that respond to glutamate, a very common neurotransmitter in mammalian brains and invertebrate nervous systems. Bates undergraduate students have done research projects under her direction to investigate glutamate receptor pharmacology and function in two model systems, the central nervous system of the snail, Helisoma, and frog oocytes expressing rat brain receptors (see research interests and student projects).
She teaches courses in neurobiology, drug actions on the nervous system, cell and molecular biology, sensory biology and the science of alternative medicines. One of her primary teaching goals is to instill in her students an excitement about neurobiology, which she accomplishes through engaging students in novel laboratory and library research projects that utilize modern neuroscience methods. ]]>I received a B.A. in Biology with a concentration in Environmental Science from a rival college of Bates. I'll let you guess which one it may have been! The things I enjoy most when I'm not at work are family, traveling, camping, canoeing and most any adventure that takes place out of doors.

Instruct undergraduate students in toxicological risk assessment, environmental toxicology, pharmacology and introductory biology. Research interests focus on studying the mechanisms by which environmental contaminants disrupt normal development, including investigations to determine the mechanisms by which developmental dioxin exposure induces dilated cardiomyopathy in the fetal chick and to determine the incidence of imposex in marine invertebrate populations of the Maine coast.

2003-present, Adjunct Faculty and Researcher, Maine Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health, Bioscience Research Institute, University of Southern Maine, Portland, Maine. Collaborate in Center-wide research project that investigates the developmental effects of arsenic exposure in a mouse model system. Responsibilities include incorporating general aspects of developmental toxicology into experimental designs and investigating the impact of arsenic on the developing cardiovascular system. Also guest lecture in the Center’s graduate-level Introduction to Toxicology course.
January - May, 2003, Visiting Scientist, School of Pharmacy, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Investigated the role of beta-adrenergic receptor signaling in the formation of dilated cardiomyopathy induced by developmental exposure to dioxin in a chick embryo model system.
