Research interests Understanding the regulation of transposable element movement in the genomes of eukaryotes using the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. Also interested in advancing science education opportunities for students.

Service Learning Joe has sponsored several interdisciplinary biology/education theses and independent study projects. The Biology 131 course, Human Genetics & Biotechnology, hosts local 5th and 6th graders every year on campus to enjoy a "lab day" as an integral part of the course.
