Jim Murphy '69 has been the women's basketball and women's soccer coach at Bates since 1994, compiling a 271-112 career record in 15 years as basketball coach. Entering the 2008-09 season, Murphy ranked 32nd among active coaches and 35th all-time in Division III women's basketball in terms of winning percentage (.712). During Murphy's tenure, the Bobcats have made four NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the regional semifinals in 1997-98 and to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2004-05. The Bobcats advanced to the NESCAC Championship semifinals in all but two years of the tournament's existence and faced Bowdoin in the finals for four consecutive seasons from 2003 to 2006. From 1969 to 1993, Murphy coached and taught English at Masconomet Regional High School in Topsfield, Mass. He reached six Massachusetts state championship games in girls' soccer and girls' basketball, garnering four Coach of the Year honors. "Student-athletes at Bates are challenged both in the classroom and on the court in a warm, friendly environment," Murphy says. "Players on my team learn that hard work can be fun and rewarding, and both individual and team goals can be achieved by working together."
