Sagaree Sengupta is an independent writer, scholar and translator who has been teaching part-time at
Bates College since 2004. She holds a PhD in Asian Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, an M. A. in South Asian Studies from the University of Wisconsin and a B. A. in English from Cornell University. She has taught numerous courses in South Asian literature, languages and civilization at the Universities of Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin prior to moving to Maine. While specializing in Hindi, Urdu and Bengali poets of medieval and colonial India, Sengupta is interested in wider literary and artistic traditions of South Asia. She has published research articles on the path-breaking 19thc. Hindi/Brajbhasha writer Bharatendu Hariscandra, and on more recent Indian and Pakistani authors. Sengupta has also published translations of poems, short stories and novels from Hindi, Urdu and Bengali. She has contributed her original poetry to Ravishing Disunities: Real Ghazals in English (Wesleyan University Press, 2000) edited by Agha Shahid Ali, as well as to various literary journals. She received an NEA grant in 2002 to translate The Diary of a Maidservant by prominent modern Hindi novelist Krishna Baldev Vaid. On another front, Sengupta is an avid textile artist who--inspired by tradition-- often works with recycled fabrics.
Sengupta’s courses at Bates focus on classical and medieval poetry of India, and are geared towards helping students hone their writing and presentation skills. She is advisor to pre-major students who have taken a First-Year Seminar with her. Currently, Sagaree Sengupta is also serving as Graduate Fellowships Advisor; she works with the Graduate Fellowships Committee to assist students and recent graduates who wish to apply for prestigious awards sponsored by Bates College.
