June 14 - September 25, 2005
Bates Gallery

In 2005, Bates celebrates its sesquicentennial, honoring a 150-year history that has, from its very earliest years, been marked by innovation and opportunity, while at the same time valuing deeply the traditions of the liberal arts and sciences, and their critical role in a just and civil society. The Museum of Art is proud to be part of the yearlong celebration by representing the enduring spirit of Bates College in an exhibition by the faculty from the Department of Art and Visual Culture. Artists included in the exhibition are Robert Feintuch, Jessica Gandolf, Paul Heroux, Pamela Johnson, Penelope Jones, Elke Morris, Joseph Nicoletti, and Erica Rand with Elizabeth M. Stephens (UC-Santa Cruz).

Bates College is proud to present this exhibition as we also recognize the 50th anniversary of the Museum of Art. The exhibition provides an opportunity to celebrate and communicate the excellent relationship between the museum and the Art and Visual Culture department. The museum and department work closely together to provide students with opportunities in the arts while encouraging creativity and innovation.

The Bates College Museum of Art is a laboratory for the visual arts. Providing an environment for a broad audience to explore and discover synergies created by visual art across academic disciplines within the liberal arts education, we represent the new academic museum for the twenty-first century. The museum works collaboratively with artists, students, faculty and other museums to create exhibitions that offer new scholarly explorations and educational projects linked closely to our communities. Through original exhibitions, programming and a growing collection the museum transcends its commitment to expanding traditional notions of art history and identifying specific artists and artistic trends that address local and global issues in context.
