Q: First: The Brazilian BBQ last night was AMAZING! The pork was really
tender and had excellent flavor, and the chicken was really good too!
Mmm...and the potato salad, fruit salad, and homemade salsa - I was in
heaven! I would have expected to have a dinner like that out at a
restaurant! Thanks! Are the barbeques going to alwasys have a theme this
short term! (so much more fun than always having the typical bbq fare!)
Also, I've noticed that during the past few lunches and dinners, you have
offered grilled chicken breast - is this a part of providing adequate meal
options for those observing passover? I really appreciate having a
consistent grilled chicken option - is there any way we can keep it
throughout short term and maybe during the fall and winter semesters too?
A: Thanks for writing. We can certainly look at continuing the plan chicken breast option.
Q: Please do not alter the toll house pie ever again. It was perfect and then
you added chocolate frosting to it. This took away some of its luster and
crowded the pie with too much chocolate. Please return the pie to normal.
Thanks.
A: We were trying something new, which we obviously will not do again. Thanks for writing.
Q: Yes, hello miss. i will be a student next year at bates, the menus online
look delicious. i am a person that is allergic to cheese, and also a
vegetarian and was wondering if when u served the food in the commons you
label if it is "vegan", "Contains Chicken Stock", contains cheese" or if
this isnt already done i am hoping it can be done for next year. It looks
great and i am excited thank you so much.
A: All our vegetarian items are made with a vegetable base as is all our vegan items. In addition, all vegan items contain no cheese etc. At this point we do not label all items that contain dairy, but this information is
available upon request. While we already do extensive labeling we could
look at adding contains dairy as well.
If you are concerned about navigating Commons and want to make sure you are making educated choices I would be more then happy to meet with you upon arrival. It has been my experience, because of the large number of
offerings available to students, that it takes time to understand and learn
all that is available.
Please let me know if you would like to meet.

Q: I love the butter twists on Saturday! They were awesome!! Please have
them more often during the school year. Thanks!
A: Glad you liked them and we will make sure they are served more often. Thanks.
Q: I love the sugar free cakes and cookies, they are great!
I was just wondering what the nutritional content of each were (calories,
fat, etc). Thanks so much and keep up the great work! (I'm going to miss you guys when I graduate)
A: We have a lot of these items, are there specific ones you would like this
information for or all of them? Thanks.

Q: In regard to the taco bar...
I know there is always debate about people either loving or hating the
taco bar, my biggest problem with it is simply that it takes away the
pasta bar - which I use as a backup if i don't like the main courses. Would it be possible to just move it to the extra station in the big room so we could have both?
A: We can see what we can do. Thanks for writing.
Q: I have noticed recently that the taco bar is not making as frequent an
appearance. Is there a reason for this? The taco bar is one of the best
things commons makes, is there a way we can have it more often?
A: Due to some concerns voiced, we did eliminate one of its appearances.
Thanks for writing.
Q: can you have more of the creamy italian dressing in the salad bar....
A: sure can.
April 8, 2005:
Q: We've only had apple blintzes at sunday brunch twice this whole year.
Please, please bring them back!! They will be perfect short term fare..
any day of the week, not just sundays!
A: Sure can do. Thanks for writing.
April 5, 2005:
Q: hello commons napkin responder- i enjoy reading the napkin board and have noticed that it has not been updated in quite some time. this is highly dissapointing. anything you can do???
A: As I indicated in an earlier napkins, I have a student who does the final
witty responses and this individual has been toed up with studies. The
napkins should be up this week.
Q: The super-charged ice cream sundae bar last night (which I assume was an Adventures in Dining) was incredible!!! Especially having all the
different flavors (such as strawberry, mint, and what I believe was a
sorbet) and toppings (oreo, heath bar, and fruit!). Can we please have this during Finals week instead of one of the traditional Junk Food or Breakfast nights? I think it would be a bigger moral booster :)
A: Glad that you enjoyed. While it is too late to make this change to this
time, we will definitely look at doing this next year.
Q: Can we PLEASE have the Curried Squash Soup more often!!!! It is sooo good. Thanks.
A: Sure can. Thanks for writing.
Q: Is the soy margarine in the vegan fridge partially hydroginated? If it is,
could we look into making some kind of buttery spread available without
trans-fats. They're wicked bad for you!
A: The soy margarine is partially hydroginated- would not stay in stick form
if it was not. We can look for something else, but it is very hard to find
many items today that in one form or another do not contain partially
hydroginated oils/oil substitutes.

Q: The oyster mushrooms in the vegan bar on Wednesday, March 30, were
fantastic. I hope they will appear more often. Is there some way that I
can get the recipe?
A: This item is very labor intensive, but we will try and incorporate it more
often. As an asides, this is one of favorite items especially when we
serve it with a watermelon ketchup. Thanks for writing.
Q: The bobcat paw cookies were AMAZING that were at dinner last night for
dessert... can we please have them again??
A: Sure can. Thanks for writing.
Q: I would just like to quickly point out that the taco bar is by far, my
FAVORITE meal at bates college. i would even be satisfied infact,
overjoyed if the taco bar was available every single day in commons. and,
furthermore, everyone who does not agree with me, can just avoid the taco
bar, like everyone else when they dont see something they like. thank
you. i look forward to the next taco bar day with great anticipation.
A: Thanks for your response and there are many, many others who share your view.
Q: I know this napkin is a bit late, but the bowtie pasta with chicken and
alfredo(??) sauce of last week was great stuff!! Probably the best pasta
bar dish I've had.
A: Thanks for writing.
April 2, 2005:
Q: The carrot-ginger soup is AMAZING! I was bummed out when it was only out at lunch on Wednesday. Could we please have it more often?
A: Sure can. Thanks for writing.
April 1, 2005:
Q: The chicken bow tie pasta tonight was AMAZING! can we please have it more often!
A: Can do. Thank you.
Q: The chicken and bow-tie pasta bake (with the spinach, tomatos, and creamy cheesy sauce) was excellent tonight (April 1st)! One person on the table got it, and then we all landed up getting a bowl--keep it in rotation and
make it more often like you did tonight!
A: Thanks for writing and will do.
