Women’s Tennis loses to No. 22 Bowdoin on Senior Day
April 22, 2005

LEWISTON, Maine – Hosting its final home match of the season, the Bates College women’s tennis team lost to Bowdoin College, ranked No. 22 in the country, by a score of 9-0 Monday at Merrill Gymnasium.  Despite the lopsided final score, the Bobcats battled the Polar Bears in every match and were on the losing end of four tiebreak sets.

The match will be remembered as the last home contest of an outstanding senior class, consisting of three four-year starters.  Coach Paul Gastonguay honored the class of 2005, his first recruiting class, by presenting the seniors with roses during introductions.

Co-captains Lindsay Yost ’05 (Erie, Pa.) and Heather Bracken ’05 (Pittsburgh, Pa.) have been four-year starters in both singles and doubles; Diana Wilkinson ’05 (Los Angeles, Calif.), earned the starting position at No. 6 singles this season; and No.1 singles player, Tara De Vito ’05 (East Hills, N.Y.), who was unable to attend due to injury, has led the Bobcats at the No. 1 spot for four years.

Bracken made her singles debut this season at No. 6 and lost 6-3, 6-4; she also tested a tough team with partner Liz Currie ’06 (Yarmouth, Maine) at No. 2 doubles, losing 9-7.

Yost and partner Laura Harris ’07 (Mercer Island, Wash.) played great in their first match together, but lost a tiebreak set at No. 3 doubles, 9-7 in the tiebreaker.

At No. 6 singles, Wilkinson was the only Bobcat to win a set, but she was unlucky in the super tiebreaker for the third set, losing 10-5.

Starting Friday, Bates will finish up its season at the NESCAC Championships this weekend at Middlebury College.
