Class of 1980 reunion 2005

Class Secretary: Vin Skinner Jr., PO Box 133, Bowdoinham ME 04008, vskinner@gwi.net

Class President: Christine Tegeler Beneman, 105 Spurwink Rd., Scarborough ME 04074, cbeneman@maine.rr.com

Hakan Lonnqvist writes: "Met with Ichiro Takayama '78 and Jonas Nycander '80 on the Swedish west coast for a Japanese-Swedish Sushi-Clambake in October. Adding raw plaice and tuna to the more common pickled herring and smoked salmon is worth a try! Hoping to be able to return to Bates for the next Reunion."... Mary Powers was named the Swampscott (Mass.) Education Association Teacher of the Year. She has taught various elementary grades, but as she told a local newspaper, she finds her current assignment for third grade the most rewarding. "It's considered by developmental psychologists to be the year of emergence from early childhood," she told the paper. "It's the year the children really start to assert their autonomy." Mary encourages her students to develop their critical thinking skills. "I'm teaching them how to go beyond factual recall to reflective things."
