Sylvia Federico earned her BA from the State University of New York at Purchase, and her MA and PhD degrees from Indiana University. She joined the Bates faculty in 2005 after teaching medieval literature in the School of English at the University of Leeds for several years.
She is author of New Troy: Fantasies of Empire in the Late Middle Ages (U of Minnesota Press, 2003) and co-editor of The Post-Historical Middle Ages (forthcoming from Palgrave Macmillan); she has also published articles on topics related to Chaucer’s poetry, women’s history, and medieval London.
Current research interests include theories of medieval historiography and fourteenth-century Iberian manuscripts. Recent courses taught at Bates include Tolkien’s Middle Ages, Chaucer, Arthurian Legend, and Medieval Romance; she is currently developing a new course on Medieval Spain.
Professor Federico was awarded a Mrs. Giles Whiting Teaching Fellowship, and is on leave for 2008-2009.
