Program Notes

The Bates College football program gives student-athletes the opportunity to compete on an intercollegiate football team in the prestigious New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). Football players at Bates have a reputation for playing hard on the field and being positive contributors to the Bates community off the field. High school and prep school football players with a proven academic record and a love for the game should consider applying to Bates.

The NESCAC schedule lasts eight weeks, with all eight games against conference opponents. The team with the best record at the end of the season earns the NESCAC Championship. Bates also competes against Maine rivals Bowdoin and Colby for the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin title. While all NESCAC institutions are members of NCAA Division III, the NESCAC does not participate in the NCAA Division III Championship.

2003 Recap/2004 Outlook
Bates defeated Williams for the first time in school history and ran its winning streak over Bowdoin to five games in 2003. Almost every game was a close one for the Bobcats, as six of their eight games were decided by 10 points or less.

Ken Adams '07 (Newburyport, Mass.) was named the NESCAC Offensive Rookie of the Year after piling up 666 yards in six games, including five consecutive 100-yard games. Seven players earned All-NESCAC recognition, including defensive back Mike Horan '05 (Stoughton, Mass.), who led the league with 18 tackles for loss.

The Bobcats lost their starting quarterback and almost the entire offensive and defensive lines to graduation. The eight returning starters will provide some stability early in the 2004 season for Bates. Other returning veterans and a talented rookie class should make an immediate impact for the Bobcats.
