Program Notes

The Bates College men's soccer team gives student athletes the opportunity to play in one of the most competitive NCAA Division III conferences in the nation. Members of the men's soccer team are expected to be committed to excellence both on the field and in the classroom.

The regular season consists of a 14-game schedule, including nine games against New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opponents. The top seven teams in the regular season standings qualify for the NESCAC Championship, with the winner earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.

The Bobcats have earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Team Academic Award in each of the last two seasons after posting a team GPA above 3.0.

Senior goalkeeper James Kenly will be a captain for the second consecutive season in 2004.
2003 Recap/2004 Outlook

After graduating nine starters, the 2003 men's soccer was a rebuilding year for Bates. The team finished with a 5-8-1 record, losing three NESCAC games by one goal. The Bobcats did have an historic 2-0 win over Middlebury, the first in head coach George Purgavie's career. Anthony Silva '03 (Salem, Mass.) was a second-team All-NESCAC selection at midfield, finishing third on the team in goal production with 11 points.

The Bobcats will have to deal with the loss of Silva and five other graduating seniors in 2004. The loss, however, will be lessened by one of the best recruiting classes in recent history. Kyle Rushton '07 (Windham, N.H.) and Igor Echave '07 (Elbar, Spain) both earned starting roles, and three other first-years played significant minutes off the bench in 2003.
