Program Notes

The golf team gives both male and female student athletes the opportunity to represent Bates College at prestigious tournaments and beautiful golf courses in New England. The team competes only during the fall season, requiring a strong commitment for a relatively brief period of time.

The season runs from early September to late October, with four championship events. The team competes against traditional rivals Colby and Bowdoin for the CBB title, and also vies for the State of Maine championship. The championships of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) are among the most competitive fields in the nation.

2003 Recap/2004 Outlook
The golf team had a tremendous late-season surge in 2003, claiming the CBB title and placing 25th at the NEIGA Championship. The Bobcats were second among NESCAC schools and ninth among NCAA Division III institutions at the season-ending NEIGA Championship.

The Bobcats will have to recover from the loss of Dom Lee '04 (Silver Springs, Md.), who was the team's most consistent golfer in 2003. Several returning golfers showed promise in 2003, including Nate Purinton '06 (Toledo, Ohio), who finished tied for the lead at the CBB championship before losing in a playoff, and Sam Haaz '06 (Flourtown, Pa.), who placed third at the State of Maine championship. In addition, Dana Lee '07 (New York, N.Y.) emerged as one of the top female Division III golfers in the Northeast.
