Field hockey falls to Plymouth in season opener

Bates field hockey fell to Plymouth State today, 3-1 in their season opener at home. The Bobcats are 0-1 on the season, while the Panthers improve to 3-1.

Heidi Hand (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) opened up the scoring when she scored with 49:51 remaining with Jenna Lace (Pascoag, R.I./Burrillville) assisting. Plymouth earned a penalty stroke when Molly Lanigan (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) deflected a shot off of her leg. Goalkeeper Sarah Judice (Granby, Conn./Granby) made a clutch save to maintain the score 1-0.

Melanie Bates’ (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) goal from Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) put the Panthers up 2-0 early in the second half. The Bobcats tallied a goal of their own 1:30 later when Rachel Greenwood (Williamstown, Mass./St. Mark’s) scored her first collegiate goal unassisted.

Silva struck again with 17:48 remaining with Christina Farias (East Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) assisting to give the Panthers their final goal of the game.

Judice posted eight saves on the day, while Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) recorded five of her own.

The Bobcats will travel to the University of Southern Maine Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. game.
