Bates junior Steve Monsulick (Kents Hill, Maine) shaved a second off the course record at Harkness Memorial State Park.

WATERFORD, Conn. -- Junior Steve Monsulick finished first overall in a course-record time to lead the Bates College men's cross country team to a second-place team finish at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Connecticut College on Saturday.

Monsulick (Kents Hill, Maine) covered the 8-kilometer course at Harkness Memorial State Park in 25:19, one second better than the course mark and 29 seconds ahead of second-place Ryan Wells of SUNY Oneonta.

Monsulick headed the list of four Bates runners who earned All-ECAC honors. Joining him on the team were sophomore Matt Dunlap (Farmington, Conn.), who finished fifth overall in 26:05; sophomore Andrew Percy (Woodbridge, Conn.), who was 12th overall in 26:17; and senior Matt Biggart (Cheshire, Conn.), who was 14th overall in 26:18.

Senior William Kenney (Washington, D.C.) rounded out Bates' top five, at 39th overall (26:48). Bates finished second as a team to Williams, 46 points to 71, and ahead of third-place College of New Jersey (149). Thirty-eight teams were involved in the race.

Following Kenney were first-year Peter Dittmar (Newtown, Conn.) at 41st and classmate C.J. Murray (North Andover, Mass.) at 66th. All-NESCAC runner Dan Johnson was held out of the race to prepare for the NCAA Regional championships, held this coming Saturday in Springfield, Mass.

"It was an outstanding day for all of our guys," said head coach Al Fereshetian. "All seven of them ran lifetime personal records. Hopefully, next week we can put together a great day again at the NCAA Regionals."

Fereshetian noted that Monsulick was 42 seconds better than his PR, Biggart was 14 ahead, Dunlap was 34 ahad, Percy was 45 ahead, Kenney was 46 ahead and Murray was 31 ahead. Dittmar was over a minute and 30 seconds better than his personal best.
