Coffin named to All-America soccer team; Alexander, Wagner All-Region
December 8,
2005
Bates College junior defender Meg Coffin has been named Second Team All-America by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and she and two teammates were named to the All-Region team in New England. Coffin (Westford, Mass.) and junior forward Kim Alexander (Cumberland, Maine) made the NSCAA's First Team All-Region, while sophomore midfielder Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.) was named Second Team All-Region. Both Coffin and Alexander were named Second Team All-Region in the 2004 season. Junior defender Meg Coffin (Westford, Mass.), junior forward Kim Alexander (Cumberland, Maine) and sophomore midfielder Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.) gave the Bobcats three of the 12 first-team spots, more than any other team. Coffin switched from a wing defender spot in 2004 to the sweeper position in 2005, and served as the anchor of Bates' tough defense, which held opponents to a mere 0.87 goals per game. The three-sport standout also scored six goals, tying her for eighth in the NESCAC. Coffin was also a first-team All-NESCAC soccer player in both 2005 and 2004, and a second-team All-NESCAC basketball player last season. Alexander headed Bates' high-octane offensive attack. Her 12 goals ties her on top of the league's scoring list with Tufts University's Ariel Samuelson, who was voted First -Team All-American. Alexander has made the All-NESCAC First Team for two consecutive years. As the center midfielder, Wagner handled the ball as much as anyone on the team, with great results. Her eight assists put her alone atop the NESCAC rankings, and her five goals put her in a tie for eighth in the league. The three players all played enormous parts in an outstanding season for the Bobcats. Bates (14-4-1) won its first NESCAC championship with a 2-1 double-overtime win over Tufts University, and made its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1996, advancing to the second round before being ousted by Tufts. The Bobcats also set a new school record for wins in a season. Coffin is the fifth Bates player to be named All-American, after Bethany Maitland '89 (1988), Amy Brunner '94 (1993), Jenna-Marie Maconochie '94 (1993) and Kate O’Malley '00 (1996, 1997). |
