Satyricon!

Advanced Latin (201, 301, 401)

Course Description

In this course students of varying degrees of Latin experience will work together on translating passages from the Satryicon of Petronius. We will read and study the entire text in translation as well. All students will meet twice a week for translation. Students registered for Latin 201 will meet together in a third weekly session to review Latin grammar and morphology. All students will also meet in a weekly session to discuss assigned readings on the historical and literary background of the text and modern scholarly analysis of the Satyricon. Latin 201 students will present oral reports on assigned articles about the Satyricon. Latin 301 students will present 5 page (1500 word) seminar reports on their assigned readings about the history and culture of the Neronian age. Latin 401 students will prepare and workshop in class a 15 page (4500 word) term paper on the Satyricon. Latin 301/401 students are welcome to attend the Latin 201 grammar review sessions.

There will be 3 (three) one-hour exams during the course of the semester and a one-hour exam during finals week (Tuesday, December 12, 2000: 1:15pm). The exams are not cummulative (i.e., you will only be tested on new material we've covered since the last exam).
