Mathematics and Statistics Workshop:

Text: Single Variable Calculus, Third Edition, by Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, McCallum, et al. (published by John Wiley and Sons, Inc.) One copy of the text and two copies of the complete solutions manual are on reserve in the library.

Calculator: TI-83 Graphing Calculator (or equivalent) (but none capable of "symbolic manipulation"). You will be allowed to use the calculator on quizzes, tests, and the final exam with the exception of a few quizzes.

Tests: The dates for the two in-class tests are Friday, February 4, and Friday, March 11. Eric Towne, the department's Assistant in Instruction, will conduct a review on Wednesday night prior to each test. Any questions regarding the grading of a test need to be cleared up within two days after the test has been returned.

Missed tests: In the event of a verifiable emergency that prevents you from taking a test at the scheduled time, you must notify me as soon as possible, and in any case, before the next regularly scheduled class. Make-up tests will be administered at my discretion and may be harder than the regular exam.

Final Exam: The final exam is scheduled for Tuesday, April 12 from 8:00 am. to 10:00 am. Every student has to take the final exam at this time.

Homework/Quizzes: Homework will be assigned weekly. Either selected homework problems will be graded or there will be a quiz based on the homework problems. These quizzes will be included in the homework grade and will not be announced earlier. It is your responsibility to get the information regarding the homework due for the next class.

Labs: There are six labs during the semester in the following weeks: 1/17, 1/31, 2/14, 3/7, 3/21, 4/4 . You will sign-up for the lab times on the first day of class. The labs are an integral part of the course, and are conducted by Eric Towne. Contact Eric (etowne@bates.edu) with any lab-related questions.

Grades: The weights of each category in your final grade are as follows:

Homework/Quizzes: 10%

Labs: 5%

Class participation: 5%

Tests: 25% each

Final exam: 30%

To calculate your grade in each category at the end of the semester, I will divide the total points earned by the total possible points in that category and then multiply it by the value indicated above. For instance, if there were 130 possible homework points and you got 110 points, then I will take 110/130 and multiply it by 10 to get the homework portion of your grade. Adding the results for each category will give your final grade percentage.

Academic Dishonesty: I expect you to be familiar with the College's policies on this. In particular, cheating on an exam will earn an F on the exam itself, perhaps for the whole course, and undoubtably, a date with the student conduct committee. On the other hand, I expect you to work with one another, help one another on homework assignments.
