Text: Linear Algebra and its Applications, Third Edition, by David C. Lay (published by Addison Wesley) One copy of the textbook and the complete solutions manual is on reserve in the library.

Tests: The dates for the two in-class tests are Friday, October 7; and Friday, November 11. A test may have a take-home part to it, containing a project or problems that may require the use of Maple. Prior knowledge of Maple is not required; instructions to use Maple will be provided. Any questions regarding the grading of a test need to be cleared up within two days after the test has been returned.

Missed tests: In the event of a verifiable emergency that prevents you from taking a test at the scheduled time, you must notify me as soon as possible, and in any case, before the next regularly scheduled class. Make-up tests will be administered at my discretion and may be harder than the regular exam.

Final Exam: The final exam is scheduled for Monday, December 12 from 8 to 10 a.m. Every student has to take the final exam at this time. In case of an emergency contact me and the Dean of Students office as soon as possible to make alternative arrangements.

Homework/Quizzes: Homework will be assigned weekly. Either selected homework problems will be graded or there will be a quiz based on the homework problems. These quizzes will be included in the homework grade and will not be announced earlier. It is your responsibility to get the information regarding the homework due for the next class.

• Homework is due at the beginning of the class. Quizzes will be at the beginning of class.
• Late homeworks will not be accepted. If you are unable to hand in the homework during class, you must hand it in on the due date by 1 p.m. in my office (Hathorn Hall, Room 211). A few of the lowest homework/quiz scores will be dropped at the end of the semester.
• Grading will be on both correctness and completeness. Correct answers which are not accompanied by coherent explanation will be worth 0 points.

Grades: The weights of each category in your final grade are as follows:

Homework/Quizzes: 15%	Class participation: 5%
Tests: 25% each	Final exam: 30%

To calculate your grade in each category at the end of the semester, I will divide the total points earned by the total possible points in that category and then multiply it by the value indicated above. For instance, if there were 130 possible homework points and you got 110 points, then I will take 110/130 and multiply it by 15 to get the homework portion of your grade. Adding the results for each category will give your final grade percentage. I reserve the right to alter these percentages to account for unforeseen circumstances.

Attendance: We will engage in class discussions as we learn new concepts. We will solve problems together on the board or in groups. Class participation is essential for these activities and so attendance is required.

Academic Integrity: The College Code of Student Conduct will be enforced in all the areas of the course and students found to be in violation will be subject to the appropriate disciplinary processes.
