In the summer of 2025, Nabiha Azad &#8217;27, Kim Bocardo &#8217;27, and Carolina Gonz\u00e1lez Valencia, Associate Professor of Art and Visual Culture, represented Bates. The Tanaka family\u2019s objective is fostering international exchange and understanding. Bates students are introduced to Japan, its people, and culture. The language used is English. Students and faculty alike have found the experience rich and sometimes life-changing.<\/p>\n<p>In the year following the trip, the Technos Fellows share their experiences of the Technos International Week through visits to various classes and a poster presentation during Parents and Family Weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Selection Criteria:\u00a0<\/strong>The selection committee reviews applications from students. Student candidates should have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a genuine interest in Japan, its people, culture, and history;<\/li>\n<li>an excellent academic record;<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0a willingness to meet people from different racial and cultural backgrounds and experience elements of Japanese culture, living conditions and cuisine which may seem foreign;<\/li>\n<li>no previous travel experience in Japan (guest participants should be new to the cultural and geographical elements of the program);<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0little or no proficiency in the Japanese language and strong English language skills\u00a0(guest participants are encouraged to use English with their counterparts at Technos College).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Eligibility:<\/strong> Any first-year, sophomore, or junior may apply. Typically, selected students are citizens of the United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand, or a country whose citizens are permitted visa waiver conditions for short-term entry to Japan. View the complete guidelines for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/academics\/files\/2023\/01\/Technos-2023-Guidelines.pdf\">Technos International Week 2026.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>To Apply:\u00a0<\/strong>Students applying for a Technos Fellowship should complete<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/academics\/student-research\/summer-grants-summary\/technos-international-week-in-japan\/technos-application\/\">the application form<\/a><\/strong> and submit a letter or email of support from one member of the Bates College faculty.\u00a0<strong>Applications are due by 11:59 PM on February 1st. <\/strong>Letters of support may be mailed separately but are also due by the deadline to <strong>Edili Lopez <\/strong>. Please contact <strong>Edili Lopez<\/strong> at <strong><a href=\"mailto:elopez@bates.edu\">elopez2@bates.edu<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0if you have questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reporting Requirements.\u00a0<\/strong>A brief 1-2 page report is required within two weeks of completing the Technos International Week program and sent to<strong><a href=\"mailto:fellowshipreports@bates.edu\">\u00a0fellowshipreports@bates.edu<\/a><\/strong>.
