{"id":2473,"date":"2010-09-10T18:18:50","date_gmt":"2010-09-10T18:18:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hub-dev.bates.edu\/dean-faculty\/academic-year\/bates-student-research-fund\/"},"modified":"2026-09-10T20:08:36","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T00:08:36","slug":"bates-student-research-fund","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/academics\/student-research\/academic-year-research-grant-information\/bates-student-research-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"Bates Student Research Fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bates Student Research Fund assists individual students in their efforts to gain research experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Application Deadlines (11:59 PM ET)<\/span><br \/>October 1<br \/><\/strong><strong>December 1<br \/><\/strong><strong>February 1<br \/>March 1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"484ae392-c6e7-401e-ab65-c6327655e426\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Eligibility and Funding Amount<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"484ae392-c6e7-401e-ab65-c6327655e426\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All students may apply for competitive grants to support independent research, associated with curricular programs including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Senior Thesis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Independent Study (260 or s50)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Independent, individualized research within the context of an academic course<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students working on group projects may submit group applications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Students may receive more than one grant per year. Requests for additional funding will not be considered until the last round in Short Term.<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The grant provides an award of up to $300 per approved project.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"43b70da3-5d56-47b8-aed4-bbdf48e01da4\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Eligible Expenses<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"43b70da3-5d56-47b8-aed4-bbdf48e01da4\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grants cover direct expenses for research, creative projects, and presentations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Research &amp; Lab Costs:<\/strong> Specialized supplies, animals, external lab sample analysis, books, software, or databases not available on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Artistic Production:<\/strong> Studio art thesis supplies, design materials, musician fees, and creative production costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Travel &amp; Fieldwork:<\/strong> Travel to research sites, archives, museums, libraries, or external laboratories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Participant Compensation:<\/strong> Incentives for study or interview subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dissemination:<\/strong> Registration or technical fees for presenting at online conferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: Additional costs associated with remote study are also considered.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ineligible Expenses:<\/strong> Regular course supplies\/textbooks, inter-library loan fees, standard department-purchased materials, ongoing faculty lab costs, thesis production fees, or personal gear (e.g., hiking equipment).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"7515ce62-8b82-40f0-850d-b90103000335\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Application Requirements <\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"7515ce62-8b82-40f0-850d-b90103000335\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Applications must include:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The title of your project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One paragraph (max 150 words) abstract of the project written for the general reader<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brief narrative description of the project&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Detailed budget<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Written endorsement by a faculty member<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Checklist&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is the application complete? Is the abstract clear and concise?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the project well-defined and realistic?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has the appropriate faculty sponsor provided a written endorsement of the project?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the budget itemized and reasonable?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do the funds requested reflect the kind of support which will make a difference in the project?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do the funds requested meet expenses which are not covered by the student&#8217;s department or program?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can the project be completed in the amount of time specified?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"93b859e6-5353-4037-b36d-08c0cfd12634\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Tips for Successful Grant Writing<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"93b859e6-5353-4037-b36d-08c0cfd12634\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What makes a good proposal?
