Research is broadly defined, and also includes projects focused on artistic practice. Summer Research Fellows are expected to devote <strong><em>at least<\/em> 8 weeks<\/strong> of the summer to full-time research (approximately 40 hours per week).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fellowship includes a grant of $5,000.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"cf7fa371-f70f-4438-b0a8-435921d1e69e\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"cf7fa371-f70f-4438-b0a8-435921d1e69e\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Eligibility and Criteria<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"cf7fa371-f70f-4438-b0a8-435921d1e69e\">\n<p>Actively enrolled and full-time first-year, sophomore, and junior students may apply. Graduating seniors are not eligible. Approximately 25-30 Summer Research Fellowships are awarded annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Because the goal of summer grant programs is to contribute to a student\u2019s academic success and persistence at Bates, all summer funding is contingent upon a student maintaining a G.P.A. of at least 2.0.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can not use research grant funding to participate in a credit-earning summer academic program&nbsp;<em>or<\/em>&nbsp;receive academic credit for summer research.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is a research project that involves a full-time (up to 40 hours per week) commitment for eight to ten weeks; therefore you cannot hold any other job at the college during the weeks you conduct your research, and you are not expected to be working in any other job during this time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"0973e360-686f-4c15-9647-f562c76b49ad\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"0973e360-686f-4c15-9647-f562c76b49ad\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Application Procedures and Materials Needed to Apply <\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"0973e360-686f-4c15-9647-f562c76b49ad\">\n<p>Students applying for a Summer Research Fellowship need to fill out the SRF application form and attach within the form the following documents as a SINGLE combined PDF by 11:59 PM on the deadline listed above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>provide a one-paragraph (NO MORE THAN 100 words) abstract of the research project describing the research questions and project goals;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provide a project description of NOT MORE THAN 2 DOUBLE-SPACED pages outlining methodology and timetable, relevance to the student\u2019s academic program, and the student\u2019s qualifications for the research;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>on a separate sheet, provide short list of bibliographic resources (4-5 references);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Letters of Support.\u00a0The proposal must be accompanied by a letter of support from the project advisor, usually a Bates faculty member. If the summer project advisor is NOT a Bates faculty member, a letter of support is required from the off-campus advisor in addition to a letter of recommendation from a Bates faculty member. Letters of support are due on the same day as the application deadline, so please plan accordingly. If letters of support are sent separately, they can be sent via email to <strong>summerfellowships@bates.edu.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"1ab78a50-3a86-498d-8097-eeb4bb710da9\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"1ab78a50-3a86-498d-8097-eeb4bb710da9\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Selection Process and Reporting Requirements <\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"1ab78a50-3a86-498d-8097-eeb4bb710da9\">\n<p>Summer Research Fellowships are awarded by the Student Research Committee, chaired by Assistant Dean Edili Lopez. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within two weeks of completion of the project, research fellows are expected to submit an electronic abstract and a brief final report to<strong> summerfellowships@bates.edu<\/strong> in the Dean of the Faculty\u2019s Office. Fellows are required to present their research during the Back to Bates Summer Research Poster Session unless they are studying abroad that fall.\u00a0Any future grants from this office are contingent upon\u00a0receiving the final reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final report should give a summary of your project goals and whether or not you accomplished what you set out to do from your original proposal. What were the discoveries? <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"372ddc33-30ca-4d5a-96f6-41e5c481f0eb\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"372ddc33-30ca-4d5a-96f6-41e5c481f0eb\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Where Does the Funding Come From For These Fellowships?<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"372ddc33-30ca-4d5a-96f6-41e5c481f0eb\">\n<p>Summer Research Fellowships are funded through a variety of sources, including &nbsp;an endowment established by the Maximilian E. and Marion O. Hoffman Foundation; the Dorothy Dole Johnson &#8217;41 Endowment for science research; the Kelsey Endowment (for research in neuroscience); the Phillips Endowment; the Pribram-Ruff Endowment (for research in physics); the Ruggles Endowment (supporting pre-thesis research in the humanities, social sciences, and non-science interdisciplinary programs; the Stangle Endowment (supporting research or internships in politics, economics and law); and the Tanaka Foundation (supporting research in Asia).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"6ff7aa7b-f6d6-4751-aada-b2c1c2e11b21\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"6ff7aa7b-f6d6-4751-aada-b2c1c2e11b21\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Apply Now<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"6ff7aa7b-f6d6-4751-aada-b2c1c2e11b21\">\n<p>To apply, please submit an&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/academics\/student-research\/summer\/summer-research-fellowships\/student-summer-research-fellowship-application\/\">application form<\/a><\/strong>.
