These efforts must be associated with curricular programs<br>including:<br>a) senior thesis;<br>b) independent study (360)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DEADLINES FOR APPLICATIONS \u2013Due by 11:59 PM on these days:<br>October 1<\/strong><br><strong>February 1<br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"dc6e798f-ffe0-4f6a-9894-70ee8b900247\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"dc6e798f-ffe0-4f6a-9894-70ee8b900247\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Eligibility<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"dc6e798f-ffe0-4f6a-9894-70ee8b900247\">\n<p>All Bates students conducting biomedical research projects are encouraged to apply. Students working on group projects may submit group applications.&nbsp;Preference is given to students who have not received previous funding. Grants will not exceed $1,000.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"35f912e7-af6c-4723-b68c-bf62b3c9b48a\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"35f912e7-af6c-4723-b68c-bf62b3c9b48a\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Purpose<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"35f912e7-af6c-4723-b68c-bf62b3c9b48a\">\n<p>Students may request funds for purposes that pertain directly to their specific research. Some examples of funded expenses include:<br>\uf0b7 &#8211;research supplies such as chemicals, animals, etc.<br>\uf0b7 &#8211;analysis of samples by outside labs<br>\uf0b7 &#8211;compensation of&nbsp;subjects who participate in research studies<br>\uf0b7&#8211; books, psychological tests, software packages, or databases not<br>otherwise available on campus<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funds <strong><em>may&nbsp;not<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;be applied to regular course supplies, inter-library loan fees, or supplies normally purchased by the department or program. Funds may not be used to support the ongoing expenses of a faculty research laboratory or to purchase personal gear. Funds may not be used to support travel or publication fees.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"602d071b-20ea-40d2-8e85-81da91072918\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"602d071b-20ea-40d2-8e85-81da91072918\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Grant Schedule<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"602d071b-20ea-40d2-8e85-81da91072918\">\n<p>Application deadlines have been designed to make funds available to students when they are beginning to design semester- or year-long projects. Awards are&nbsp;usually&nbsp;announced within three weeks of the application deadline but cannot be guaranteed.<br><br>The ending date of the project must be stated on the application and must occur prior to April 30. Funds awarded but not spent in the time period determined by the student and indicated on the application are returned to the budget.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"bb71879e-ff60-4037-b4c0-6eec6617ff18\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"bb71879e-ff60-4037-b4c0-6eec6617ff18\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Application Criteria<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"bb71879e-ff60-4037-b4c0-6eec6617ff18\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is the application complete? Is the abstract clear and concise?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the project well-defined and realistic?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the project biomedical in nature (and consistent with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/about-nih\/what-we-do\/mission-goals\"><strong>mission<\/strong><\/a> of the<br>National Institutes of Health ?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has the&nbsp;appropriate faculty sponsor and has he or she provided a written endorsement of the project?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the budget itemized and reasonable?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do the funds requested reflect the kind of support which will make a difference in the project?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do the funds requested meet expenses which are not covered by the student\u2019s department or program?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can the project be completed in the amount of time specified?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Since funds for student research are limited and demand for support is high, this program is competitive. Students are encouraged to consult the \u201cTips for Successful Grantwriting,\u201d and to prepare the most complete and concise proposal possible.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"69ac2527-c007-428c-9a57-6c02f7725e41\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"69ac2527-c007-428c-9a57-6c02f7725e41\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Responsibilities<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"69ac2527-c007-428c-9a57-6c02f7725e41\">\n<p>1) Students who receive INBRE Student Research Supplies Fund grants should contact the Office of the Dean of the Faculty for information on obtaining reimbursements.&nbsp;Reimbursements must be completed within two weeks of expenditures.&nbsp;No reimbursements for expenses can be secured without receipts.&nbsp;Grantees are expected to<br>keep accurate records of expenses and to submit receipts to the Office of the Dean of the Faculty.&nbsp;&nbsp;Read carefully the guidelines for reimbursement, there have been changes, especially regarding human subjects reimbursements. Funds remaining at the conclusion of the project are returned to the budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2) Students working on the project for more than 1 month cumulatively must obtain<br>an eRA Commons ID and update their profile on eRA Commons. Grant recipients will be contacted with instructions.<br><br>3) Grant recipients are not required to submit a Data Management &amp; Sharing Plan.<br>However, if data from the supported project are ultimately published, the underlying data must be made available in an appropriate, publicly available repository. Therefore, grant recipients and their mentors should develop a plan to ensure that data are preserved if future publication is possible.<br><br>4) All presentations or publications derived from the supported research project must acknowledge the Maine INBRE grant. The following statement is strongly encouraged:<br>\u201cResearch reported in this publication was supported by an Institutional Development<br>Award (IDeA) from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National<br>Institutes of Health under grant number P20GM103423.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5) All publications derived from the supported research project must abide by the NIH Public Access Policy.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/policy-and-compliance\/policy-topics\/public-access\/nih-public-access-policy-overview\">NIH&nbsp;Public Access Policy&nbsp;<\/a><br>The&nbsp;NIH&nbsp;Public Access Policy ensures that the public has access to the published results of&nbsp;NIH&nbsp;funded research.
