Late afternoon on unseasonably warm Nov. 9, 2020.Olivia Skillings '22 of North Yarmouth, Maine, takes notes as she stretches out on the hillside adjacent to Hathorn Hall.She was listening to the second season of American Public Media's crime podcast "In the Dark" for a sociology seminar "Race, Crime, and Punishment in America," taught Associate Professor of Sociology Mike Rocque. The episode explores the legal odyssey surrounding Curtis Flowers, a man who had been tried six times Ñ with questionable evidence Ñ for the same crime. New evidence uncovered by "In the Dark" helped get Flowers' case dismissed more than 23 years after his arrest.The seminar examines how race and crime Ñ as well as race and punishment Ñ are intertwined from historical and contemporary perspectives.
