Barlow Alumni Travel Grant
In 2001, David Barlow ’79 established an endowed fund to enhance study abroad opportunities for Bates students, faculty, and alumni.
In response to the disproportionate impact Covid-19 is having on immigrant communities of color in the USA as well as travel concerns related to the virus, we have amended the terms of the award for the 2021 grant cycle. In 2021, in addition to travel proposals, we also invite alumni educators to seek support for local initiatives engaging members of immigrant communities in the US that have been disproportionately impacted by Covid-19. The disproportionate impact may be related to rates of infection; loss of education, employment, or housing opportunity; and/or, drug and alcohol abuse disorder.
The Barlow Alumni Educators Travel Grant awards up to $3,500 each year to support Bates alumni in pursuing an international experience to enhance their educational and professional goals. Applications are welcome from Bates alumni who have been working in K-12 school settings or within the nonprofit sector on education-related advocacy or service for at least five years. Preference will be given to individuals who work with or within under-resourced school systems.
Applications are due by May 2, 2021. Proposals are reviewed by a committee of faculty and staff, and the award will be announced by the end of May 2021.
