No longer a far-off prospect for a distant future, it\u2019s been blamed for wildfires in Australia and California and political unrest in the Middle East. Bev is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebluecarboninitiative.org\/working-groups\">international scientific working group<\/a> on coastal blue carbon and studies the potential of carbon storage and sequestration in salt marshes, seagrass beds, (and mangroves ) as a means for mitigating climate change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/alumni\/files\/2020\/02\/Bev-Johnson-tile.jpg\" alt=\"Professor of Geology Beverly Johnson uses a sediment elevation table to measure the height of the Sprague River Salt Marsh, part of the Bates\u2013Morse Mountain Conservation Area.\n.\nThese data are used to measure the response of the marsh to rising sea level and storm activity, Johnson says. Campbell Professor of Economics<\/a><\/h5><div class=\"foldaway-section \">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Lynne\u2019s work has covered topics including valuation of ecosystem services, water quality trading, water allocation and the impacts of climate change. She recently participated in an NSF grant focused on valuing the potential benefits from dam removals and river restoration. Part of that new research involves estimating distance decay in willingness to pay for river restoration and building a bioeconomic model connecting freshwater systems to the inshore cod fishery. She is also working on new research focused on building coastal resilience in the face of sea-level rise as well as examining economic resilience and capacity building in the face of rapid glacier melt.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lewis\u2019s teaching areas include microeconomics, environmental economics, natural resource economics, and valuation. She recently c-taught a Short Term course, <em>In Search of Higher Ground: Flooding, Sea Level Rise and the Future of the Eastern Seaboard<\/em>. This class traveled through coastal Maine, Virginia and North Carolina learning about adaptation policies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/alumni\/files\/2020\/01\/Lynn-Lewis-tile.jpg\" alt=\"Bates environmental economist Lynne Lewis, associate professor of economics, poses on the Auburn banks of the Androscoggin River behind The Hilton Garden Inn Auburn Riverwatch.\n\nHistorically, in states like Maine where rivers were treated as part of the industrial infrastructure, pollution and other industrial effects depressed the value of property near rivers. He began his arctic research in the Canadian Arctic focusing on glacial and sea-level history and high-resolution records of climate change preserved in annually layered lake sediments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2005, Mike began working in western Spitsbergen (Svalbard, Norwegian arctic) on the Svalbard REU Project (National Science Foundation, Research Experience for Undergraduates program. This project involves the study of modern processes in a high arctic glacial-fluvial-lacustrine system and the investigation of longer-term and high-resolution climate change from lake sediment cores. He currently directs the summer research program for undergraduate students as a summer course sponsored by the Arctic Geology Department at UNIS, the University Centre in Svalbard. He and Professor Ray Bradley, UMass Amherst were recently funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation to study the effects of the warming climate on the high arctic hydrologic system in western Svalbard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is also currently working on a collaborative project in northern coastal Norway with his students and colleagues.<br><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/alumni\/files\/2020\/02\/Michael-Retelle-tile.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;As human beings, we\u2019re used to thinking of time as year to year or generations at the most. Putting geological events in a broader, longer, deeper context is a difficult concept to grasp. So we\u2019re using Garcelon Field as a 100-yard timeline upon which to superimpose certain geological events, from the formation of the earth\u2019s crust to the first algal fossils, the first shell fossils, first fish, first trees, dinosaurs, even the first bobcat, the last Ice Age and the formation of Bates College. On the football field, one yard is going to represent 46 million years.
