Even as we begin gathering again in-person, both on campus and in our local communities, we recognize that challenges persist for many members of our Bates family, and we continue to be inspired by the many ways Batesies have rallied together to support each other and Bates.&nbsp;<br><br>Through our annual awards program, this year we&nbsp;recognize ten alumni for their commitment to the college, service to their communities, and distinction in their careers. Their names are listed below. Four of these distinguished alumni were honored this spring and we will honor the&nbsp;remaining recipients either in person or virtually later in the year.&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/alumni\/recognition\/\" target=\"_blank\">Please nominate outstanding alumni<\/a>&nbsp;for us to consider in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three members of the Alumni Council completed their terms in June 2022; we are thankful for the dedicated service of Michael Hogan \u201985, Jeremy Chase \u201991, and Tracy O\u2019Mara Peacock \u201994, S\u201992, P\u201924, P\u201926. We also congratulate and celebrate former Council member Benjamin Robinson III \u201986, who has been selected to serve on the Bates Board of Trustees. As we say goodbye to these stellar volunteers we welcome five new members to the Alumni Council; their names are listed below. The purposes of the Alumni Council&nbsp;are to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Support the mission, vision, values, and strategic directions of the college, advancement office, and alumni engagement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be a positive, energetic ambassadors for Bates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstrate the highest levels of commitment of personal capital to the college and alumni engagement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have questions or suggestions about alumni engagement, the Alumni Council can be one of your most effective means of communicating your ideas and concerns. We have used this as an opportunity to continue to evaluate our processes to ensure that we are both representative of and representing the entire Bates alumni body to the greatest extent possible. We look forward to utilizing some of our new practices as we transition back to in-person events to be able to serve the alumni community.<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-diagonal-lightgray-bg has-dark-color has-text-color\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Increase engagement <strong>and volunteer options for alumni through the support of regional networks<\/strong><\/strong> <strong>and support career development opportunities for both alums and student<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Council Champions<\/strong>: Monica Rodriguez \u201812 and Michelle Pham \u201815<br><strong>Highlighted FY22 accomplishments:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#x2714; Collaborated with staff to provide feedback and suggestions to make the Bates Alumni webpage more user-friendly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#x2714; Supported the college\u2019s career advancement programs including the Bates Bridge and advocated for participation and engagement with the platform<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#x2714; Participated in conversations to support the Professional Development series and offered suggestions for next year\u2019s programs and new topics for Lighthouse Career Associates to consider<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#x2714; Identified regional leaders and initiated conversations to promote uniformity throughout the regional networks. This includes a plan to start calls (2-3\/year) with regional leaders this summer to talk about what has been most successful in their areas re: programming\/promotions\/etc. and what they would like to try for programs as we move into in-person\/virtual\/hybrid-style events<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#x2714; We had a very strong Alumni Council presence and participation at each of the regional events with President Spencer. For these events, we had four members attend in Boston, three members attend in NYC, and one member attend in Washington, D.C. We also had one member participate in a virtual event, sponsored by the class of 1985<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-diagonal-lightgray-bg has-dark-color has-text-color\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Ensure that Diversity, Equity,<\/strong><\/strong> <strong>and Inclusion are a central component of the Council&#8217;s<strong> work&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Council Champions<\/strong>: Leah Elsmore \u201812<br><strong>Highlighted FY22 accomplishments<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#x2714; Worked to create an Alumni Council Equity and Inclusion mission statement to ensure that these principles are a central component of the work of the Council<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#x2714; Supported Bates staff on broader strategic direction of DEI and alumni engagement, providing input on alumni events and engagement strategies<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#x2714; Promoted DEI events by sharing and promoting upcoming events with alumni networks<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-diagonal-lightgray-bg has-dark-color has-text-color\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Recognition of Alumni Excellence<\/strong><\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Council Champions<\/strong>: &nbsp;Jen Crawford \u201801<br><strong>2022 Alumni Award Winners:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alumni Community Service Award: <strong>Carlton Finch \u201945, Carolyn McNamara \u201908, <\/strong>and<strong> Amanda Webb Dickerson \u201801<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distinguished Young Alumni Award: <strong>Allen Kendunga \u201918, <\/strong>and <strong>Mikey Pasek \u201812<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sesquicentennial Prize: <strong>Jeff Tulis \u201872<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bruce Stangle Award for Distinguished Service: <strong>David Morris \u201889<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helen A.
