Yannick Marshall’s, “The Bleaching Carceral: Police, Native, Location in Nairobi, 1844-1920” reads the colonial town as not merely a theater for white supremacy but as its spatial expression. He is completing this doctoral dissertation for the Department of Middle East, South Asian and African Studies at Columbia University. He received an MA from the Institute for Research in African American Studies at the same university. His interests include the police, colonialism, anti-colonial poetics, race, and urban space in East Africa and the US. He also writes creatively and has published poems about policing and race in several literary journals. He is the author of two collections of poetry, Old Friend, We Made This for You and Empress.
