Shuhui Yang, Professor of Chinese, received his Ph. D in Chinese and Comparative Literature from Washington University in St. Louis. His first book Appropriation and Representation: Feng Menglong and the Chinese Vernacular Story<\/em> is a monograph on the role of the literati editor Feng Menglong (1574-1646) in the development and promotion of the vernacular story in Chinese literary history.  His second book project was a complete English translation with Yunqin Yang of all three collections of Feng Menglong\u2019s Sanyan <\/em>stories (i.e., Yushi mingyan, Jingshi tongyan<\/em> and Xingshi hengyan<\/em>), published by University of Washington Press in 2000, 2005 and 2009 respectively, as Stories Old and New: A Ming Dynasty Collection, Stories to Caution the World: A Ming Dynasty Collection Volume 2,<\/em> and Stories to Awaken the World: A Ming Dynasty Collection Volume 3.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stories are valuable as examples of early fiction and for their detailed depiction of daily life across a broad range of social classes. A bilingual edition of all these three collections was published by the Chinese Library of Classics in 2008, 2009 and 2011 respectively. The English translation, with the translators\u2019 introductions and annotations, was further translated into Indonesian and published by Penerbit PT Gramedia Pustaka Utama in 2006, 2007 and 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Yang has taught Chinese 101-102 \u201cBeginning Chinese,\u201d Chinese 401-402 \u201cAdvanced Chinese,\u201d Chinese 415 \u201cReadings in Classical Chinese,\u201d Chinese 207 \u201cTraditional Chinese Literature in Translation,\u201d Chinese 209 \u201cModern China through Film and Fiction,\u201d Chinese 261 \u201cSelf and Society in Chinese Culture: Classics and Folktales,\u201d Chinese s30 \u201cChinese Calligraphy and Etymology,\u201d  and First-Year Seminar 280 \u201cConfucius: Faith and Transgression.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also took Bates students to China in the short term of 1996 and 2011, and was the co-director of Bates Fall Semester in Nanjing Programs in 1997, 2000, 2003 and 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
