The Dana Scholar award goes to 10 men and 10 women from each class following the first year at Bates. It is one of the highest awards given at the college. As is, it does not recognize the gender fluidity widely accepted and accommodated on this campus and in today's society. Will student government address this inequality?
Hey! Thanks so much for this idea, its incredibly important. After reading your request, I reached out to Kerry O' Brian. She is the Assistant Dean of Faculty and oversees the committee that works on the Dana Scholars Awards. They've notified me that they have made strides to minimize the role of gender in the selection process, however they agree that much more can be done. We have scheduled a meeting to discuss this issue after break. I will post another response after the completion of that meeting. Thanks again, and I hope you're having a wonderful break. -Walt
