Brief explanations can be found below; more detailed information can be obtained from a member of the Department. Information on research grant programs is also available from\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:kobrien@bates.edu\">Kerry O&#8217;Brien<\/a>, Assistant Dean of the Faculty. We strongly urge you to consider doing research as an integral part of your Bates education!<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/academics\/student-research\/academic-year\/\">&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt; Complete listing of academic year funding options<\/a>. &lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Support for Research During the Academic Year<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/academics\/student-research\/academic-year\/bates-student-research-fund\/\">Bates\u00a0Student Research Fund<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0supports student research associated with theses, independent studies, and regular courses and units. Grants of up to $300 are awarded four times a year. (For more costly projects, students may also apply for Sigma Xi grants (usually $400-600), as described above. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sigmaxi.org\/programs\/grants-in-aid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sigma Xi grants-in-aid of research<\/strong> <\/a>cover supplies, equipment, and travel.)\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/inbre.maineidea.net\/student-training\/undergraduate-research-fellowships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Maine INBRE<\/strong><\/a> also has academic year research assistant funding options for student research.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Summer Research Grant Programs Administered Through Bates College<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>There are many opportunities for students to conduct research during the summer, as assistants to\u00a0faculty, on independent projects under the direction of a faculty member, or off-campus at a research lab or field site. Bates College has numerous sources of funds to help support these opportunities, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/biology\/files\/2011\/11\/AV-Davis-Application-2012.pdf\"><strong>A. V. Davis Student Fellowships<\/strong><\/a><\/strong> support original summer research projects designed by a student and supervised by a Biology Department faculty member.
