Joe&#8217;s research program focused for many years on\u00a0<em>Drosophila<\/em> before he shifted to the nematode,\u00a0<em>C. elegans<\/em>. Joe&#8217;s research students have been numerous, including Stephanie Richards &#8217;84 who is currently replacing Joe on our faculty. Joe help develop many teaching innovations in our core biology seuqence, including the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/abacus.bates.edu\/~ganderso\/biology\/resources\/pi.html\">Principal Investigator (PI) System<\/a> we use in core laboratories to foster collaborative investigative learning and scientific writing skills. In the late 90&#8217;s Joe spent two years as a Program Director for the National Science Foundation in Washington DC overseeing grant review for curricular development in college and university science programs. In his retirement Joe will be working a referee for a variety of sports including soccor and hockey, and will spend his extra time biking, motorcycling with his wife Pat, and training to become a flight instructor.
