Creative Approaches Help Smith Empower Children on Conservation Issues in Kibale National Park

Conor Smith ’14 (Interdisciplinary major in Animal Behavior) received a 2012 Bates Phillips Fellowship to spend 8 months working with The Kasiisi Project (http:\/\/www.kasiisiproject.org\/<\/a>), a nonprofit that works to improve educational opportunities for children living in close proximity to Kibale National Park in Uganda. Conor is leading several projects for the conservation education team, including an inter-school debate tournament that gets children to voice their opinions about pressing conservation issues. Results of this project will help The Kasiisi Project assess local attitudes toward the national park and its wildlife and direct its future conservation education initiatives.<\/td>\n\n
