On the right side, they write in response to an academic question. After having visited South Plazas Island on the second day of the trip, the academic entry asked the students to put themselves in the position of the bird and to describe their day.<\/p>\n<p>Two entries from that day stood out: one from Hannah and the other from Bianca. Their entries, set to Beyonce&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AWpsOqh8q0M&amp;feature=kp\">If I Were a Boy,<\/a>&#8221; described their day as a red billed tropicbird and a petrel, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Below are their great entries and representative images for each bird (enjoy!):<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3595\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/biology\/files\/2014\/05\/tropic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3595\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3595\" alt=\"Red billed tropicbird (photo from Wikipedia)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/biology\/files\/2014\/05\/tropic-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3595\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Red billed tropicbird (photo from Wikipedia)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If I were a bird, even just for a day<br \/>\nI\u2019d fly high above the water, and then I would plunge dive<br \/>\nI\u2019d eat all the fish and squid I could find<br \/>\nI\u2019d fly high with all my friends, only about 50 of them<br \/>\nAnd we\u2019d glide over oceans, and rest in crevasses<br \/>\nBut we forage alone, cause sometimes we can get aggressive<br \/>\nWe hide from the humans, rats, dogs, and cats<br \/>\nThey could eat all of our eggs, brothers, and take all that we have<br \/>\nBut we mate and we mate<\/p>\n<p>If I were a Red Billed Tropicbird, then I would live 16 years<br \/>\nI could plumage in 2 years and get myself a mate to date<br \/>\nAnd I\u2019d make sure she\u2019s top rate<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019m not a bird, and no I can\u2019t fly<br \/>\nSo I\u2019ll never know what its like<br \/>\nTo live the life of a Red-Billed tropicbird<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014 Hannah Loeb &#8217;16<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3596\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/biology\/files\/2014\/05\/petrel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3596\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3596\" alt=\"Elliot's storm petrel (photo from antpitta.com)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/biology\/files\/2014\/05\/petrel-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3596\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elliot&#8217;s storm petrel (photo from antpitta.com)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Even just for a day<br \/>\nI&#8217;d fly out in the morning<br \/>\nso graceful by the water and go.<\/p>\n<p>Spot fish with sharp eyes<br \/>\nand chase after squid<br \/>\nWouldn&#8217;t mate with who I&#8217;d wanted<br \/>\nbecause I&#8217;m only three years old<br \/>\nhaven&#8217;t reached sexual maturity.<\/p>\n<p>If I were a bird<br \/>\nI think I&#8217;d be a petrel<br \/>\nhow it feels to sing &#8220;kee-kee-kee&#8221;<br \/>\nI swear I&#8217;d only do that at night.<\/p>\n<p>The Miconia Zone<br \/>\nis where I like to breed<br \/>\nwhen you mate for life like I do<br \/>\njust use the same burrow each year<br \/>\nbut still my populations&#8217; getting destroyed<\/p>\n<p>If I were a bird<br \/>\nI think I would understand<br \/>\nhow hard it is to be a bird<br \/>\nhow easy it is to be Man.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014 Bianca Sanchez &#8217;16<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every day students are asked to do a double-entry journal.
