The symposium, \u201cFostering Diversity in Microbiology\u201d, is part of this effort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><em class=\"\"><strong>Call<\/strong>:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Bates College Biology Department seeks applications from microbiology postdoctoral scholars and advanced PhD students from groups underrepresented in the sciences to participate in an expenses-paid panel on microbiology and on STEM education.\u00a0 We especially welcome applications from individuals of Black\/African American, Latinx, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Native Pacific Islander descent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The\u00a0<em class=\"\">Fostering Diversity in Microbiology<\/em>\u00a0New Scholars Symposium will take place January 14-16, 2018 as part of our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><em class=\"\"><strong>Goals<\/strong>:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">We have four main aims for this New Scholars Symposium:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">highlight current topics in microbiology, featuring the research and\/or pedagogies of the panelists;<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">discuss issues surrounding undergraduate and graduate STEM education for scholars from underrepresented groups;<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">engage with curious undergraduates on topics related to diversity, inclusivity, education and research in STEM;
