“Maya Angelou once said, “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This can be said for\u00a0<\/span>Black\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>ulture<\/span>\u00a0in its entirety.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n

Black\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>ulture<\/span>\u00a0is the archetype for innovation, distinction, creativity,\u00a0<\/span>intelligence,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>spirituality,\u00a0<\/span>and healing.\u202f<\/span>Black\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>ulture<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is distinct,<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>it has a heavy influence on\u00a0<\/span>American and global cultures.\u00a0<\/span>Likewise, Black\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>alent is both ubiquitous and abundant,\u00a0<\/span>but the excellence of Black people is often obscured<\/span>. To remove the bleach from the history books, the Community of Scholars formed this list of inspiring Black\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>cientists.\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>e are also here to dismantle the myth that outstanding Black scientists make up a small percentage of the scientific community.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We are here to compel and imbue the next generation of Black\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>cientists and other minoritized individuals to enhance and empower our culture\u2019s dignity. We also emphasize the need for continued appropriation of resources and the removal of obstacles and racial barriers to continue to amplify Black\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>ulture and\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>alent<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>e hope\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>this post generates the zeal necessary to\u00a0<\/span>help<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>people become\u00a0<\/span>well-<\/span>rounded\u00a0<\/span>p<\/span>ersons\u00a0<\/span>e<\/span>xcluded because of their\u00a0<\/span>e<\/span>thnicity or\u00a0<\/span>r<\/span>ace<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>PEER<\/span>s<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that is not thought of as a statistic that\u00a0<\/span>must<\/span>\u00a0achieve token status or an individual that is already\u00a0<\/span>phenotyped<\/span>\u00a0and genotyped before testing the hypothesis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Navigating a scientific career is often regarded as the pinnacle of independence.\u00a0<\/span>However, a<\/span>s science\u00a0<\/span>becomes more of a collaborative discipline<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>we<\/span>\u00a0as Black people must<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>free our minds of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>crab\u00a0<\/span>mentality,\u00a0the metrics of comparison amongst each other, and\u00a0<\/span>the bondage of tokenism.\u00a0<\/span>Political activist\u00a0<\/span>Marcus Garvey once said, “We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind.<\/span>“<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>As a\u00a0<\/span>people<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>we must honor the immense battle it took to acquire a\u00a0<\/span>doctorate<\/span>\u00a0from a country that was not appreciative of\u00a0<\/span>B<\/span>lack talent<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>We challenge the leaders\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>science to rectify the leaky pipeline that hinders PEERS to create and innovate\u00a0<\/span>at<\/span>\u00a0their fullest potential. We challenge others to carry individuals with the opportunity of chance and not the opportunity of prejudgment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>No longer should we wait and sit back for others to acknowledge our accomplishments. Now is the time to acknowledge each other, our talents, our accomplishments, and\u00a0<\/span>reclaim<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span> knowledge that could have been lost.”<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
