College Owned Fleet Vehicles

Bates College has two vans which can be reserved through the Department of Campus Safety. These vans are available for direct support of the College’s co-curricular and formally organized extracurricular programs. The vans can accommodate up to 11 people. All operators under 25 years old who wish to operate a college owned vehicle must take the Driving Training Class and submit the appropriate paperwork with the Department of Campus Safety before being allowed to drive.

Driver Certification is a 3-step process, beginning with 1) taking an online survey which can be accessed through a link in the right hand sidebar menu on this page. The results of the completed survey will be automatically sent to the Transportation Coordinator, and entered into a record keeping database. 2) Drivers wishing to be certified also must obtain at least a 3-year driver history report from the state in which they are licensed to drive; this must be submitted for review by the Transportation Coordinator, with an entry being noted of that in a record keeping database. 3) Contact should then be made to the Transportation Coordinator in order to schedule an appointment to perform a monitored road driving orientation with the vehicle. Road driving is scheduled to occur primarily on Tuesdays and early Thursdays, by appointment, and are conducted throughout the year based on the availability of vehicles and monitoring instructor. Certified drivers are identified with their names being added to a shared document, and the certifications are valid through the remainder of that academic year. In order to be re-certified, an up-to-date driver history report needs to be obtained with that noted in the record keeping database, and a fresh certification sticker can then be affixed to the Bates ID.

Availability and Use of College Vehicles

The Transportation Coordinator along with the Department of Campus Safety are responsible for the administration of the College’s fleet of two 12-passenger vans, all of which are available for rental by student organizations. Vehicle maintenance and safety inspections are the responsibility of Facilities Services in conjunction with the Department of Campus Safety.

Due to the limited number of fleet vehicles, the College is unable to accommodate every request. Fleet vehicles are available for use by student organizations in order to facilitate College academic, business and student life needs. Official College business includes: Community service transportation, academic class trips / projects / needs, administrative trips, authorized student groups and clubs and intercollegiate athletics.
