Hathorn Hall is our first and oldest campus building. It was designed by Gridley Bryant, an influential New England architect, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A variety of popular classroom spaces are inside, and it\u2019s also the home of the English department and the mathematics department. You can learn a lot from Hathorn. Its bells signal the start and end of classes. A historic clock, a gift from the Class of 1931, tells time from above the front porch. And atop the bell tower, an iconic New England weathervane tells the direction of the Maine winds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hathorn Hall, completed in 1857, is Bates\u2019 first building, as well as one of Lewistons 21 locations on the National Register of Historic Places. It is named for Seth and Mary Hathorn of Woolwich, whose several donations made its construction possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
