Students love that Bates has a single dining hall, Commons, and an unlimited meal plan. Commons offers dining spaces to suit everyone\u2019s preference, whether the large dining area or the smaller and quieter mezzanine level. Instead of an outside food service, Bates buys its own food, which is prepared in an open-kitchen setting by Bates chefs who are responsive to student needs and enjoy talking with students about their Bates lives. Focused on sustainability, Bates diverts 82 percent of its food waste by composting, recycling, and sending scraps to local farmers, efforts that earned Bates a gold rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opened in February 2008, the Bates dining Commons was built to LEED Silver equivalent level, following guidelines to be energy efficient and environmentally friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designed by Sasaki Associates, Commons allows the college\u2019s dining operation to produce close to no waste while supporting local and organic food. Flexible spaces inside and outside the dining hall, including a Fireplace Lounge and meeting rooms on the second level, offer opportunities for informal conversations and socialization among students, faculty, and staff.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
