Completed in 1899, Garcelon is the home of Bates football and men’s and women’s lacrosse. The Bates men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as a number of Bobcat club and intramural teams also compete on the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garcelon ranks among the 10 most historic fields in college football. Garcelon received a major facelift in 2010, including a new FieldTurf surface, Musco lights, grandstand, press box, and scoreboard. The original turf was replaced in 2023 with a brand-new surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With student residences on two sides and Commons on a third creating a stadium feel, Garcelon is a central, student-friendly athletic space that keeps Bobcats on the move. One of America\u2019s oldest college fields, Garcelon was built in 1899 when Bates students helped to clear a pasture with axes and shovels. In recent years, Bates donors funded a stunning renovation, adding FieldTurf and state-of-the-art grandstands, press box, and lighting.
