    Forthcoming Bates Athletics facilities improvements address a common\ntheme: to improve the experience of Bates student athletes, on and off the\nfield.\nScheduled for completion in time for the 2019\u201320 academic year, the five\nprojects will provide:\n\u25cf expanded and improved space for Bates Sports Medicine in Merrill\nGymnasium;\n\u25cf a new modular turf system for Underhill Arena, creating additional\nmultipurpose athletics space;\n\u25cf a new natural grass surface for Russell Street Field;\n\u25cf improvements to the Davis Fitness Center in Underhill; and\n\u25cf renovations and updates to the lobby of historic Alumni Gymnasium.\n\u201cThere\u2019s no off-season for Bates Athletics,\u201d says Director of Athletics Jason\nFein. \u201cWe are always looking for strategic opportunities to improve the\nathletic experience for our students and community. These projects ensure\ntop-tier spaces for our varsity and club athletes both to compete and heal;\nsupport fitness, health, and wellness of the greater Bates community; and\ncelebrate the past and present of Bates Athletics.\u201d\n\nThe various projects will be funded by Bates donors and from the college\u2019s\ncapital budget.\n\nIndoor Turf\nBetween November and March, Underhill Arena\u2019s ice surface is busy with\nrecreational skating, club hockey, and the occasional intramural broomball\ngame. The rest of the year, the iceless concrete surface is mostly idle.\nNot for for much longer. Over the summer, the college will install a top-of-the-\nline modular turf system, Nexxfield X-Gen E2 Pro. Used by venues including\n\nOlympic Stadium in Montreal, the system is the first of its kind to be installed\nby a NESCAC school. The turf floor will remain until the ice surface is\nreapplied in October, then re-installed after hockey season.\nCreating an additional 17,000 square feet of new indoor athletic and\nmultipurpose space for the active Bates community, the installation will\ncomprise more than 600 panels, each 4 feet by 7.5 feet, with a pile height of 1\n3\/8th inches, creatin<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>

    Underhill Arena features a 200-foot by 85-foot ice surface used for the Bates intramural and club hockey programs, skating classes, and college recreational skaters. In the off season, the surface is covered by a modular turf system for multipurpose athletic use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
