Several venues, including Schaeffer Theatre, support Bates students wishing to explore theater and dance. Our arts culture is egalitarian, welcoming students who seek great depth by majoring in these academic fields as well as students simply wishing to further develop their interests and abilities. Schaeffer is a 300-seat proscenium-style house, while Gannett Theater is a smaller, more flexible venue, and the experimental Black Box Theater is home to many student-directed plays. Adjacent to Shaeffer is Pettigrew Hall, home of the Brooks Quimby Debate Council<\/a>, one of the world\u2019s premiere debating clubs. Also here is the state-of-the-art Digital Media Studios<\/a>, where an expert staff is always available for friendly, one-on-one support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schaeffer Theatre, named for Lavinia Miriam Schaeffer \u2013 teacher of speech and the dramatic arts at Bates College for thirty four years, hosts a regular schedule of performances throughout the year. Offerings include major productions from the Department of Theater and Dance, events during the nationally acclaimed Bates Dance Festival<\/a>, and performances by outside theatrical groups and guest artists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
